Daughters for Earth: Women Protecting Our Planet

by Abigail Richardson from MY HERO Staff

Daughters for Earth is an organisation that supports women working to protect nature and strengthen their communities. From Indigenous land stewards and farmers to scientists and grassroots organisers, these women are finding practical ways to care for the Earth.

Daughters for Earth identifies women-led environmental projects that are already making a difference. Rather than simply telling people what needs to change, it supports those who are taking action.

The organisation provides funding for practical, nature-based solutions such as protecting forests, restoring ecosystems or helping communities develop ways of living that work alongside nature.

It also offers support through collaboration, connections and skills-building when the women and organisations it works with need it.

The approach is simple: find people who understand the challenges in their own communities, and help them build on the work they are already doing.

Women’s leadership

Women around the world are involved in protecting land, water and wildlife. Many are working in places where environmental problems directly affect everyday life, including food, farming and access to natural resources.

Daughters for Earth believes these women’s knowledge and leadership deserve greater recognition. Its work includes sharing their stories, supporting research and working with media partners to show what women-led environmental action can achieve.

The organisation also aims to make successful local solutions more visible, so that others can learn from them.

This is important because environmental problems can feel enormous. Climate change, deforestation and the loss of wildlife are global challenges, but the people working on solutions are often rooted in particular places and communities.

From local action to wider change

Daughters for Earth focuses on supporting work that benefits both nature and people. Its vision is of a world where environmental action grows from connection rather than extraction, and where women’s leadership is recognised as a foundation for lasting change.

The organisation also encourages everyone to play a part. That might mean supporting women-led environmental work financially, learning more about the challenges facing our planet or making changes in everyday life to reduce our impact on nature.

Not everyone can lead a conservation project or restore a forest. But everyone can make choices that show care for the world around them.

Every action counts

The organisation is inspired by the story of The Hummingbird Effect where one small action can inspire others and together, those actions can change the world.

In the story, a terrible fire breaks out in a forest where all the animals live. Frightened, they watch as the flames spread. Most stand helplessly, unsure what they can do.

But one tiny hummingbird flies to the river. She dips her beak into the water, collects a single drop and carries it back to the fire. Then she flies back for another.

And another.

The larger animals laugh at her.

“What are you doing? You’re too small to make a difference!”

The hummingbird looks at them and replies, “I’m doing what I can – all I can! Why don’t you join me?”

Inspired by her determination, the other animals begin to help. Together, they work to put out the fire and save their forest.

Wangari Maathai tells the story here:

Daughters for Earth reminds us that protecting the planet is not the responsibility of one person, one country or one organisation. It is something we can all contribute to.

The women it supports are showing what can happen when local knowledge, determination and practical action come together. Their work is a reminder that caring for the Earth is not just about looking at the problems. It is also about supporting the people who are working on solutions.
