Edward H. White, II

by Matthew from Joplin

The way I would describe a hero is a man who is greatly admired for his skills and achievements, or a man who shows great courage. My here is Ed White. He has shown great courage under many different circumstances.

On June 3rd, 1965 Ed White conducted the first "spacewalk", time spent out side the space craft while in space. He stayed out the craft for 20 minutes, surpassing the time of the first Russian spacewalk three months prior.

On January 27, 1967 Ed and two other astronauts were loaded into the Command Modual of Apollo 204 at 1 PM. The test started out with problems. First, when astronaut Gus Grissom pluged his oxygen supply into the rocket supply it had a foul smell to it. Second, ther was a high flow of oxygen into the cabin, which triggered a master alarm. Third, there was a communications problem between the astronauts and ground control.

Finaly, there was a fire persumeably started in or near one of the wire bundles to the left and just in front of Grissom's seat on the left side of the cabin. They, the crew, were unable to escape before the fire consumed them. The firemen arived and medics soon after, they determined the died of Carbon Monoxide asphyxia.

Ed White is a hero to me because he gave his life trying to help future generations reach the stars.
