Nature is treated with disrespect and is being destroyed. If action is not taken, we will lose it with all its beauty.

ENDANGERED ENDEMIC SPECIES IN SLOVENIA

by Students form Gimnazija Tolmin from Slovenia

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you. Frank Lloyd Wright

                                                                      HEROES AS LARGE AS LIFE

                                                      NATURE

as the world of living things with all its phenomena has always been breathtaking in its beauty. It used to follow its own laws and everything depended on the mercy of its forces. Until now.

have been changing it to fit their needs and are degrading and destroying their own MOTHER

thus killing their source of life. Being destructive is easier than being creative and nature-friendly because it is more comfortable.

HEROES AS LARGE AS LIFE:

SHORT-HAIRED SANDWORT or Moehringia Vilossa  (KRATKODLAKAVA POPKORESA)

126573Short-haired sandworthttps://www.gore-ljudje.net/objave/savenc/2015/11/18mb03.jpgShort-haired sandwort is a Slovene endemic plant. It grows in the cracks of dry, sunny and rocky slopes and is a plant species rarity in the southern part of the Julian Alps. This white flowering plant is on the Red List of Threatened Species mainly due to forestry management and landslides.

VENUS HAIR or Adiantum Capillus-Veneris (VENERINI LASKI)

It grows in consistently moist soils, usually  in limestone rocks in part to full shade. It is native to the southern half of the United States , Central and South America and Eurasia. It can be found in damp woods near Tolmin (Grahovo ob Bači). Venus hair is a species of ferns listed as endangered.

OLM or Proteus Anguinus (ČLOVEŠKA RIBICA)

126575Proteus Anguinushttps://www.sloveniaholidays.com/img/gallery/img10156_location.jpgThe olm or a cave-dwelling salamander has been living in some caves of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and north eastern Italy for over 20 million years. It is blind but it can sense electric and magnetic fields. Due to chemical pollutants leaching into the caves, the proteus is now vulnerable to extinction.

HORVATH’S ROCK LIZARD or Iberolacerta Horvathi (HORVATOVA KUŠČARICA)

126576Horvath's rock lizard https://galerija.foto-narava.com/albums/userpics/101000/P1140857-ihor.jpgHorvath's rock lizard is native to north western Croatia, Slovenia and the adjoining parts of north eastern Italy and southern Austria. This species inhabits areas with exposed rock surfaces, cliffs  with little vegetation and coniferous forest at altitudes of 200 to 2,000 m. It is very agile, even leaping into the air to catch prey. Most of its habitat is split up into fragments, making the population extremely vulnerable.

Apollo Butterflly or Parnassius Apollo (GORSKI APOLON)

The wings of this butterfly are decorated with large black and red eye-spots which vary in size and location. Climate change and acid rain have caused the decline of this species.

Marble Trout or Salmo Marmoratus (SOŠKA POSTRV)

126578Marble trouthttps://www.tnp.si/assets/Spoznajte/Zivalstvo/Opisi-zivali/soska-postrv-foto-Michel-Roggo-opis.jpgThe marble trout is a species of freshwater fish known for its distinctive marble colour pattern. It is found in only three basins and two rivers of the Adriatic  basin, namely the Po and Livenza basins in Italy, the Soča basin in Slovenia and Italy, the Neretva in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, and the Morača in Montenegro. Its natural habitat is rivers with a summer temperature of 15 °C (59 °F). It suffers numerous threats because of the introduction of foreign trout species stocked for angling and water pollution. Other threats are habitat loss due to the construction of dams on the rivers, over fishing and poaching.

These and many other plants and animals should be admired for their outstanding power to withstand the test of time and strength. They have been around longer than humans and they should live on planet Earth in harmony with humans. However, this natural process has been reversed because people disrespect and destroy nature. Nature should not lose its battle for survival and there is still time to prevent the loss of this beautiful and unique world. Nature is already a HERO but people still need to become heroes and behave like ones. Only in that way will we be
