Princess Diana

by Kim and Amanda

Diana Spencer was born July 1,1969, in Norfolk England. Her parents were Frances Spencer and Lord Althrop who became the eighth Earl Spencer in 1975. Diana had 2 older sisters Jane and Sarah and a younger brother named Charles. Diana had known Charles the Prince of Wales most of her life (he had once dated her older sister Sarah and she had been his younger brother’s playmate as a child). He proposed in February 1981 and they were married that July.

Princess Diana was compassionate even though she was very rich and powerful. Diana travelled thousands of miles per year for a number of causes including AIDS and the banning of landmines. Diana also spent some of her time visiting sick childern in hospitals and the homeless people at homeless shelters.

Diana was also very helping to others. She spent much of her time, energy, and money supporting her many charities. At one auction she sold 79 of her evening gowns, raising 5.7 million for AIDS and Cancer funds. One of her charities was even the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace prize.

Princess Diana was independent. She used her power to do good things. In February 1996, when she and Charles divorced, she dropped the prefix Her Royal Highness from her name and was barred from succeeding the throne. However, she continued to raise her 2 sons, Harry and William, while working with her many charities.

We picked Princess Diana as our hero because she did a lot of good things for a lot of charities. She was an important person to a lot of people and used her power well. People who did not much about Diana can know how helpful she was to the less fortunate.
