Mother Teresa and Terry Fox

by Ashley from Mill Valley

A hero is a hero for many different reasons. They can be a hero for their actions, their courage, their invincibility, their goodness, their thoughts, their beliefs, or their ideas. My idea of a hero can have any one of these things. However, it has to be done well and be something from the heart that maybe normal people don’t even care about. To me all those people that are looked over are heroes.

One of the heroes that I chose is Mother Teresa. This woman found that her gift was saving peoples’ lives through medicine. She was a nun and when she discovered her talent, she moved to a small town called Calcutta to help people there, since she had been raised in a small town herself. She is a hero to me because of her goodness and invincibility. She is celebrated as a saint around the world. Even though she has passed away, her goodness will help her to stay in our hearts forever. Mother Teresa once said, “Before you speak, it is necessary for you to listen, for God speaks in silence of the heart.” To me this means that God tells you things through your heart and that you should follow your heart.

The other hero that I picked is Terry Fox. This young man lost his leg to cancer when he was only a teenager. Yet, he decided to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer. He ran about 28-30 miles each day. Just outside Thunder Bay, Canada, his cancer spread to his lungs and he died a few months after. Because of his courage there now is a run named after him that takes place on his birthday every year. There is also a mountain named after him in the Canadian Rockies.

Mother Teresa and Terry Fox seem like they don't have much in common. Mother Teresa died of natural causes and Terry Fox died of cancer. Mother Teresa cured medical problems and Terry Fox had a medical problem. Mother Teresa was a nun and Terry Fox seemed like an everyday guy just without one leg. But they both have something big in common. That is that they both fought against medical problems and proved themselves heroes.
