*A Reef Built by Many Hands* follows my summer at Dr. Shinya Shikina’s coral lab in Taiwan, where an abandoned abalone pond has become a farm for thousands of coral fragments. Around it, an unlikely community has formed: researchers, French and Malaysian interns who first reached out through a cold email, company volunteers, children learning to handle coral, and divers returning underwater to measure whether transplanted colonies survive. At the center is Dr. Shikina, a scientist whose work shows that restoring a reef takes more than growing coral. It takes bringing people together to care for it.
