This story is about an over-competitive and grumpy Cantonese man who sells fish for a living. He gets frustrated at his inability to sell more fish than his rival, and his desperation to win causes him to overwork and hallucinate. In the hallucinations, we see how his life is mirrored by the seafood in the fish tanks: desperately fighting to get to the top, only to find nothing there. In the end, it is the person he thought was his enemy who saves him and teaches him the value of balance and connection. Instead of reveling in his victory, the rival extends a hand of kindness, showing the man that life isn’t just about competition—it’s about community and mutual support.
Through its cultural lens, this story is a reminder that life isn’t just about reaching the top—it’s about finding meaning in the journey and the people we share it with.
